The Committee to Support U.S. Trade Laws (“CSUSTL”), an organization representing American companies and workers that are concerned about the effective enforcement of U.S. trade laws, has closely followed developments in the Rules negotiations taking place as part of the Doha Development Round (“Doha Round”) within the World Trade Organization (“WTO”).  To date, those talks have been characterized by a marked imbalance in the negotiations, whereby there have been dozens of proposals under consideration that would seriously undermine U.S. trade laws – but very few proposals that would strengthen such laws.  As the Obama Administration continues to analyze options for moving the WTO Doha Round forward (and with the recent selection of a new Chairman to oversee the Rules negotiations), CSUSTL believes it would be timely and appropriate to chart a new course in the Rules negotiations – one that would restore balance to the talks and lay the groundwork for a successful outcome acceptable to the U.S. Congress and public.
